Pawatama lived in the village of Buppalpudi and was the only person in her Hindu family who accepted Christ. When she became a Christian she received a new name, Awamma. Even though she had now been a Christian for many years, she had not been able to convince any of her family members to join with her in her faith.
One day Awamma became very ill and died. Knowing she was dead, the family laid her on the floor and covered her with a white sheet while making arrangements for cremation. All of the family were called and as they were preparing to take her to the burial ground, Mr. Pakeer, a Bible worker from the nearby village of Choderitavalesa, stopped by the home to visit with Awamma, not knowing she had died. Because she had been a Christian, the family asked Mr. Pakeer, "Please offer a prayer for her so that her soul may feel happy." Mr. Pakeer thought, "They are fools. Why are they asking me to pray for a dead body. What is the use of praying for a dead body. There is no soul to feel happy."
But he said he would pray. He had them kneel down beside her body. And after prayer, he left.
When the family were about to lift her body to carry her to the burning ghat, they noticed her body move. Suddenly they stopped and brought water and poured it on her face. She suddenly sat up on the cot. Everyone was astonished and wondered how such a thing could happen. What a miracle it was! Then everyone began talking about the prayer offered by Mr. Pakeer.
Awamma was told, "Your God, Jesus, has given you life. We were about to take you to cremate you. But your faith in Jesus has given you life."
It was a great wonder in the village. Awamma is thankful to be alive and able to witness for Jesus to those in Buppalpudi. ______________________________
